Loretto Junior High Football Advances to Tri-County Conference Championship
The Loretto Junior High Mustangs will play for a championship Saturday night.
Loretto has advanced to the Tri-County Conference Championship Game, where the Mustangs will host the Summertown Eagles on Saturday, October 3, at 6 p.m. at Loretto High School.
The championship appearance continues an impressive turnaround for Loretto. After opening the season with losses to Columbia Academy and Mt. Pleasant, the Mustangs have won five of their last six games to enter the title game with a 5-3 overall record.
That stretch began with a memorable 20-12 road victory over Richland on August 20. Loretto overcame a fourth-quarter deficit and scored the winning touchdown with only two seconds remaining, giving Head Coach Daniel Smith his first victory as a head coach.
From there, the Mustangs continued to build momentum. Loretto shut out Zion Christian 24-0, defeated Waynesboro 20-6, and after a narrow 12-6 loss to E.O. Coffman, responded with victories over Summertown and Collinwood. The Mustangs closed the regular-season portion of their schedule with a 38-20 win over Collinwood on September 24.
Saturday's championship will also be a rematch between Loretto and Summertown. The Mustangs traveled to Summertown on September 10 and came away with a convincing 26-8 victory over the Eagles. This time, however, the stakes will be much higher with the Tri-County Conference championship on the line.
Loretto has scored 150 points while allowing 106 through its eight games this season. Perhaps more telling is the way the Mustangs have responded since their 0-2 start, going 5-1 over their last six contests and earning an opportunity to finish the season with a conference championship.
The title-game appearance is another milestone in Smith's first season leading the program. Following his first win in August, Smith credited the effort his players had put in throughout the spring and offseason and said their ability to keep fighting through adversity was a testament to the team. Now, that work has put the Mustangs one victory away from a championship.
