LORETTO, Tenn. — A large homecoming crowd, beautiful fall weather and a determined fourth-quarter comeback highlighted an exciting evening at Loretto High School on Friday, October 23, as the Mustangs celebrated Homecoming 2026 and hosted Bolivar Central in their final home football game of the season.

Although the Mustangs came up just short on the scoreboard, falling 28-21 to the Tigers, the evening provided plenty of memorable moments as students, families, alumni and supporters gathered to celebrate Loretto High School.

Among the highlights was the announcement of Jack Avery Vandygriffe as the 2026 Homecoming King and Sophie Weathers as the 2026 Homecoming Queen.

Vandygriffe, a member of the Mustang baseball program, and Weathers, a member of the Lady Mustang basketball team, were selected from a senior class represented by five couples on this year's Homecoming Court.

Loretto High School Recognizes 2026 Homecoming Court

The 2026 Homecoming Court featured representatives from all four high school classes, recognizing students selected to represent their classmates during the annual celebration.

Freshmen representatives were Addie Suratt and Finn Beckman.

Sophomore representatives included Alexa Crosby and Anthony Belland, along with Delaney Pusser and Damian Rice.

Junior representatives were Avery Cheatham and Sam Brown; AnnaLee Grabbett and Paul Heineman; and Leah Gowen and Micah Ridgeway.

Senior representatives included Catelyn Adams and Aiden Sanders; Jeremiah Shannon and Ally Augustin; Jack Avery Vandygriffe and Bella Cozart; William Wallace and Lexie Massey; and Sophie Weathers and Avery Weathers.

The announcement of Vandygriffe and Weathers as Homecoming King and Queen capped off the court's recognition and added another special memory to the school's 2026 celebration.

Homecoming Spirit Fills Butch Toner Stadium

A large crowd, including a strong turnout from the student body, filled L.M. Forsythe Field at Butch Toner Stadium for the Mustangs' final home appearance of the year.

The evening featured nearly ideal football weather, with temperatures in the mid-60s and only a light breeze.

The Mustangs took the field wearing black helmets, black jerseys and black pants, while the field's yard lines were painted black, continuing a tradition that has become part of Loretto's homecoming atmosphere.

The game also marked the final home appearance for Loretto's 10 senior football players, who served as team captains for the evening.

Mustangs Battle Back in First Half

Bolivar Central struck first after Loretto's opening possession ended on a turnover on downs. Taking over in Mustang territory, the Tigers needed just three plays to find the end zone, with Deniyus Woods scoring on a short touchdown run.

Loretto responded in the second quarter with a steady offensive drive led by sophomore running back Caden Hagan.

Hagan carried the ball nine times during a 10-play, 65-yard possession, finishing the drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Henry Chambliss added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:15 remaining in the half.

The Tigers answered with a 74-yard scoring drive, capped by a seven-yard touchdown run from Chris Henderson, to regain a 14-7 advantage.

Once again, the Mustangs responded.

Quarterback Ben Lyles connected with Asher Sharpe on a 27-yard touchdown pass, using a pump fake to create an opening near the corner of the end zone. Chambliss converted the extra point, tying the game at 14 with 3:25 remaining before halftime.

Bolivar Central managed one more scoring drive before the break, with quarterback Canyon Swift reaching the end zone on a keeper to give the Tigers a 21-14 halftime lead.

Second-Half Rally Keeps Loretto Within Reach

Bolivar Central opened the second half with a lengthy possession, consuming more than six minutes of the third quarter before Woods scored his second touchdown of the evening.

The score extended the Tigers' lead to 28-14, but Loretto refused to go away.

The Mustangs put together another sustained drive, relying entirely on their ground attack to move down the field. Hagan finished the possession with a three-yard touchdown run, his second score of the night.

Chambliss connected on his third extra point, cutting the deficit to 28-21 with just 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Neither team would score again, but the final period offered plenty of drama.

Bolivar Central attempted to control possession and run down the clock, while the Mustang defense fought to give its offense another opportunity.

With just over a minute remaining, Hanley Thornton intercepted a Tigers pass and returned it to the Loretto 40-yard line, giving the Mustangs one final chance to produce a tying touchdown.

Elijah Chapman provided an immediate spark, carrying the ball 11 yards to near midfield.

However, the comeback ended when Bolivar Central intercepted a Lyles pass with less than a minute remaining, sealing the Tigers' seven-point victory.

A Memorable Final Home Game

Although the final score was not what Mustang fans had hoped for, Homecoming 2026 provided an opportunity to celebrate students, recognize the senior class and bring the Loretto community together for one more Friday night of football.

On the field, Caden Hagan led the Mustangs' scoring effort with two rushing touchdowns. Lyles connected with Sharpe for Loretto's other touchdown, while Chapman contributed important plays in the rushing and passing attacks. Chambliss finished a perfect three-for-three on extra-point attempts.

The loss dropped Loretto to 1-8 on the season, while Bolivar Central improved to 3-6.

The Mustangs will close out the 2026 regular season on the road at Mt. Pleasant in their final region matchup.

While the homecoming game ended in disappointment on the scoreboard, the recognition of King Jack Avery Vandygriffe, Queen Sophie Weathers and the entire Homecoming Court, along with the strong community turnout and determined effort from the Mustangs, made the evening a special part of Loretto High School's 2026 school year.
