From the City of Loretto
We’ve had several questions about the newly painted fire hydrants and the different-colored tops.
The colors aren’t decorative. They tell firefighters approximately how much water each hydrant can supply:
🔵 Blue — 1,500 gallons per minute or more
🟢 Green — 1,000–1,499 gallons per minute
🟠 Orange — 500–999 gallons per minute
🔴 Red — Below 500 gallons per minute
Flow can vary based on the size and layout of the water mains, elevation and the hydrant’s location within the system. A red or orange top does not mean the hydrant is broken. The color gives firefighters important information so they can quickly determine the best water supply during an emergency.
