HUNTINGDON, Tenn. — The Loretto Lady Mustangs volleyball team kept its postseason hopes alive Monday night, October 12, earning a berth in the Class A sectional round with a semifinal victory over Madison Academic Magnet before falling to longtime rival Summertown in the Region 6A championship at Huntingdon High School.

Loretto opened the evening with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Madison, winning 25-8, 25-18 and 25-15. The victory guaranteed the Lady Mustangs another postseason appearance and set up a rematch with Summertown, which had advanced past host Huntingdon earlier in the evening.

Loretto Sweeps Madison to Secure Sectional Berth
With their season on the line, the Lady Mustangs wasted little time establishing control against Madison.

Loretto's offense came out firing in the opening set, with Haylee Bennett, Lilly Augustin and Francesca Folli delivering early kills. The Lady Mustangs also found success from the service line, repeatedly putting Madison on the defensive.

Taylor Reedy helped fuel the early momentum with strong serving, while Tate Newton and Ava Sharpe also contributed service aces. The Lady Mustangs quickly opened a double-digit advantage and cruised to a 25-8 opening-set victory.

Madison showed considerably more resistance in the second set.

The teams battled through several early ties before Loretto began creating separation. With the score tied at seven, the Lady Mustangs put together a five-point run to build a 12-7 advantage.

Madison continued to fight, eventually trimming Loretto's lead to 16-13. However, the Lady Mustangs maintained control down the stretch behind timely kills from Bennett, Bella Grace Sanderson and Folli.

Loretto claimed the second set 25-18 to move within one set of advancing.

The third set followed a similar pattern, with Madison refusing to go quietly.

The teams traded points early, and Madison remained within striking distance at 11-10. Loretto responded with another run, sparked by strong serving from Reedy and continued offensive production from Bennett.

The Lady Mustangs eventually built a 22-15 advantage before closing out the set 25-15 and completing the sweep.

Bennett led Loretto's offensive effort with 10 kills according to the broadcast's unofficial statistics. Sanderson added six kills, while Reedy finished with five service aces.

The victory sent Loretto into the Region 6A championship and, more importantly, secured a place in Thursday's sectional round.

Summertown Takes Region Championship in Rivalry Rematch
For the fourth time this season, Loretto and Summertown met on the volleyball court, this time with a regional championship and the opportunity to host a sectional match at stake.

The Lady Mustangs entered the contest having defeated Summertown 3-1 in the District 11A championship the previous week. However, the Lady Eagles turned the tables Monday night, sweeping Loretto 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19 to claim the Region 6A title.

The championship began with the familiar intensity of the two Lawrence County rivals.

Loretto and Summertown traded points throughout the early stages of the opening set. Folli, Bennett and Sanderson contributed offensively for the Lady Mustangs, while Summertown answered with strong attacks from El-Lee Lu Mason, Lena Brown and Izzy Garland.

With Loretto leading 15-13, Summertown began gaining momentum behind the serving of Madeline Gilliam.

Gilliam delivered consecutive aces as the Lady Eagles moved ahead 16-15. Summertown continued its run, eventually extending the lead to 20-15.

Loretto battled back late, but Summertown held on for a 25-21 victory.

The second set saw Summertown build another early advantage as the Lady Eagles continued finding success offensively.

Folli provided several important kills for Loretto, repeatedly finding openings in Summertown's defense. Sharpe and Delaney Pusser also contributed from the service line as the Lady Mustangs attempted to regain momentum.

Summertown built a lead that reached as many as nine points before Loretto began mounting a comeback.

Trailing 19-13, the Lady Mustangs fought their way back into contention with timely kills and improved defensive play. Bennett delivered a pair of important points late in the set, helping Loretto close the gap to 23-20.

However, Summertown weathered the rally and finished with another 25-21 victory to take a commanding two-set lead.

Facing a must-win third set, Loretto struggled to find an early rhythm.

Summertown jumped ahead 7-2 and continued to build its advantage, but the Lady Mustangs refused to surrender.

Behind several strong plays from Sanderson, Bennett and Shanna Fisher, Loretto chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled within a point.

The Lady Eagles answered with another offensive surge, led by Mason, Garland and Macy Pettus, to regain control.

Loretto continued fighting in the closing stages, including late points from Fisher, Sanderson and Newton, but Summertown secured the deciding set 25-19 to complete the sweep.

Folli was a bright spot offensively for Loretto throughout the championship match, while Fisher contributed valuable defensive plays and Sanderson delivered several strong attacks.

Summertown's ability to sustain offensive pressure and dig out hard-hit balls proved to be the difference, with Mason delivering one of the strongest performances of the evening. Setter Zoei Bonner also played an important role in directing the Lady Eagles' attack.

Postseason Journey Continues Thursday
Although the Lady Mustangs fell short of the regional championship, their season is far from over.

By defeating Madison in the semifinal, Loretto earned a berth in the Class A sectional round, where a victory would send the Lady Mustangs to the TSSAA State Volleyball Tournament.

As region champion, Summertown earned the opportunity to host its sectional contest, while Loretto will travel for its matchup.

Both games are scheduled for Thursday, October 15, with opponents to be determined following Tuesday's Region 5A tournament action.

For Loretto, the focus now shifts from Monday's disappointment to the opportunity still ahead.

The Lady Mustangs entered the regional tournament as District 11A champions, left as Region 6A runners-up, and remain just one victory away from reaching the state tournament.

Congratulations to Shanna Fisher, Francesca Folli, Tate Newton and Bella Grace Sanderson for being named to the Region All-Tournament Team!
