HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — The Loretto Lady Mustangs came within one set of advancing to the TSSAA Class A State Volleyball Tournament Thursday night, October 15, but a determined comeback by Merrol Hyde Magnet brought their season to a heartbreaking end.

After winning the first two sets, Loretto watched its 2-0 advantage slip away as the Lady Hawks rallied for a 3-2 victory in the Class A sectional matchup. Merrol Hyde claimed the final three sets to secure a state tournament berth, winning 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 15-8.

For the Lady Mustangs, the loss ended a successful season that included a District 11A championship, a Region 6A runner-up finish and a 26-19 overall record.

Loretto Takes Command Early

The Lady Mustangs wasted little time making their presence felt, opening the first set with four consecutive points.

Senior Haylee Bennett delivered an early kill, Tate Newton followed with a service ace, and Bella Grace Sanderson contributed to the quick start.

Merrol Hyde responded behind the powerful hitting of Gentry Hansen, Jena Wright and Izzy Shaw, but Loretto continued answering each challenge.

Sanderson provided several important kills throughout the opening set, while Shanna Fisher, Lilly Augustin and Bennett contributed at the net.

The Lady Mustangs eventually built a 24-20 advantage before Merrol Hyde mounted a late rally, cutting the deficit to 24-23.

Loretto managed to stop the comeback and escape with a 25-23 victory.

The second set proved equally competitive, with neither team able to establish much separation.

Francesca Folli delivered several important attacks, while Sanderson and Bennett continued finding openings in the Lady Hawks' defense.

Newton and Ava Sharpe helped direct the offense, and Taylor Reedy and Delaney Pusser contributed important defensive plays during extended rallies.

With the score tied at 22 late in the set, Loretto found another gear.

A well-placed shot by Bennett helped the Lady Mustangs reach set point, and Loretto closed out the 25-22 victory to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Just one more set stood between the Lady Mustangs and a trip to the state tournament.

Merrol Hyde Battles Back

The Lady Hawks refused to let their season end on their home court.

The third set began much like the first two, with both teams exchanging points and momentum.

Loretto continued receiving strong offensive contributions from Sanderson, Bennett and Folli, but Merrol Hyde's attack became increasingly difficult to contain.

Hansen was particularly effective, delivering powerful swings and timely plays that repeatedly challenged the Loretto defense.

The Lady Mustangs held a narrow 19-18 advantage late in the set, but Merrol Hyde responded with a run to take control.

Trailing 24-20, Loretto fought back to within a single point at 24-23, including an important block by Augustin.

However, the Lady Hawks secured the next point to claim the third set 25-23 and extend the match.

The momentum continued shifting toward Merrol Hyde in the fourth set.

Loretto battled to stay within striking distance, receiving timely kills from Folli and Bennett along with contributions from Sanderson, Fisher and Augustin.

The Lady Mustangs pulled within one point at 19-18, but Merrol Hyde responded with another late surge.

Despite Loretto's efforts to extend the contest, the Lady Hawks took the fourth set 25-21, forcing a decisive fifth set with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

Fifth Set Decides the Season

With the match tied at two sets apiece, the teams returned to the court for a race to 15 points.

Unfortunately for Loretto, Merrol Hyde carried its momentum into the deciding set.

The Lady Hawks jumped ahead 3-0 and eventually stretched their advantage to 6-2, forcing the Lady Mustangs to battle from behind.

Bennett and Sanderson continued fighting to keep Loretto alive, but Merrol Hyde's offense proved difficult to stop.

Hansen, in particular, delivered an outstanding performance throughout the final three sets, while Wright and Shaw also played important roles in the Lady Hawks' comeback.

Merrol Hyde ultimately claimed the deciding set 15-8, completing the five-set comeback and advancing to the Class A state tournament.

Bennett Closes Out Her Loretto Career

Thursday's loss also marked the final high school volleyball match for Loretto senior Haylee Bennett.

Bennett delivered another strong performance in her final appearance wearing the Lady Mustangs uniform, contributing important kills throughout the evening.

Her effort earned her the X Sports Network's Player of the Game recognition.

Bennett has been an important part of the Loretto volleyball program, and her final match reflected the determination and competitiveness she brought to the court throughout her career.

A Season Worth Remembering

Although the final result was disappointing, the Lady Mustangs have plenty to be proud of from their 2026 campaign.

Under head coach Nick Quillen, Loretto captured the District 11A championship, advanced to the Region 6A championship match and earned another opportunity to compete for a state tournament berth.

The team also received strong postseason performances from a talented group of underclassmen who will have an opportunity to build on this season's experience.

Sanderson, Fisher, Folli, Newton, Augustin and their teammates provided countless memorable moments throughout the season, helping carry Loretto to the doorstep of the state tournament.

For much of Thursday night's match, the Lady Mustangs appeared poised to take that next step. Instead, their season ended in one of the most difficult ways possible — after coming within a single set of reaching the state's final eight.

But one disappointing night does not erase the accomplishments of an entire season.

The Lady Mustangs leave 2026 as district champions, region runners-up and a team that fought until the final point.
